I installed a 10 kWh home battery last spring, mainly because our electricity rates jump sharply from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. My rooftop solar was already producing more than we used at lunchtime, but I was still buying power after dinner. The battery changed that routine almost immediately. It charges from excess solar during the day, then runs the refrigerator, lights, Wi-Fi, and dishwasher through the expensive evening window.
The installation was less dramatic than I expected. The installer mounted the battery in our garage beside the inverter and added a new energy meter. It took most of one day, including inspection, and the app was working before they left. I chose a model using lithium ion cells, with a built-in battery management system and a fairly simple monitoring screen. I can see solar generation, household load, battery state of charge, and grid use without opening a spreadsheet.
The biggest practical difference appears on my bill. Before the battery, our monthly summer bill averaged around $145, despite having solar. After three comparable months, it averaged $82. The exact result depends on cloudy weather and how much laundry we do, but shifting evening consumption to stored energy saved roughly $50 to $70 per month. We still pay a connection charge and occasionally import electricity overnight, so I am not pretending the battery makes the house free. It simply prevents the most expensive kilowatt-hours from coming through the grid.
One annoyance was the week of monitoring. The battery stopped discharging at 20 percent, even though I had set a reserve. Support explained that a firmware update had reset the backup setting. After I changed it, performance returned to normal. Now I leave a 25 percent reserve for outages and let the system handle everything automatically. That hands-off operation is what I appreciate.
