Early last summer, I installed a 10 kWh serverrack battery beside my inverter after watching our evening electricity charges climb. The goal was simple: use more of our rooftop solar at home instead of sending cheap daytime power back to the grid and buying it again at peak rates. I chose a lithium iron phosphate battery because I wanted something stable, quiet, and suitable for daily cycling.
The installation was less dramatic than expected. My electrician mounted the battery on a concrete wall, connected it to the hybrid inverter, and set a reserve level of 25 percent. That setting has been the most useful part of the setup. During sunny days, solar panels charge the battery by early afternoon; after dinner, the battery supplies the refrigerator, lights, Wi-Fi, and television before the house draws from the utility. On weekdays, it usually carries us through the expensive four-hour window without any effort or noticeable noise.
My first complete billing month was the real test. Before adding storage, our solar export credit was modest, while evening consumption cost much more. After installation, the bill fell from about $186 to $112, even though our usage was almost identical. That $74 difference is not a promise for every month, but it made the economics feel tangible. In July, with longer sunny days, I saved closer to $90. I now check the battery app mostly to see whether it will reach full charge before sunset.
I had one small winter scare. The battery stopped charging at 62 percent, and the app showed a communication warning. My installer found a firmware update had selected the wrong protocol. Once corrected, charging returned that evening. Since then, the system has provided dependable backup power during short outages, keeping the refrigerator and internet running without trying to power everything.
