I installed a 10kWh home battery last spring after getting tired of watching my electricity bill jump every evening when the heat pump and cooking were running together. My rooftop solar already covered most of our daytime use, but I was sending plenty of cheap solar power back to the grid and buying it back at peak rates. The battery has made the biggest difference during those expensive hours.
I chose a lithium battery drop in solution because I wanted to keep my existing inverter and avoid rewiring the garage. The installer checked the battery voltage, added a communication cable, and programmed the charge and discharge windows. I did have to change one setting later: the battery was charging from the grid overnight because a time-of-use schedule had been copied incorrectly. Once I corrected that, the monitoring app showed solar charging during the day and home loads drawing from stored energy after 4 p.m.
On a typical sunny weekday, my battery reaches 100 percent around lunchtime. By dinner, it is usually near 55%, and I still have enough reserve overnight. My monthly bill has fallen from roughly $210 to $125. That is about $85 saved over a year if the pattern holds, and I notice the savings most on hot evenings when peak pricing is brutal.
During one short outage, it kept our internet and refrigerator running without me touching anything. I do not claim energy independence—there are cloudy stretches and the battery still depends on sensible settings. But as a solar battery user, this has been a straightforward upgrade: fewer peak purchases, better use of my rooftop solar, and less anxiety when the bill arrives.
