8 months ago, I installed a 10kWh lithium iron phosphate battery beside my inverter, and the biggest change has been surprisingly ordinary: I no longer think about when the sun is shining.
Before the solar battery, my panels exported excess power during the afternoon, while I bought expensive electricity after dinner. Now the battery charges from solar until late afternoon and runs our fridge, lights, router, and heat-pump water heater through the evening. This simple shift has made the clearest difference on my electricity bill.
Our utility uses time-of-use pricing, so peak hours used to cost me roughly $0.32/kWh. During the first full month, the battery supplied 18.6kWh after sunset. My bill dropped by about $74, despite similar weather and usage. In winter the saving is smaller, but I still see a meaningful reduction because the system avoids the most painful evening rates. I check the monitoring app with my morning coffee, and watching the state of charge climb during breakfast feels satisfying.
The setup was not completely effortless. I needed a separate 48v battery charger lithium for initial balancing and backup charging, and the manual was less clear than I expected. My first attempt showed an error because the charger voltage profile was set for the wrong chemistry. After switching to the lithium setting and lowering the charge current, it worked normally. I labeled every cable and added a small fuse near the battery disconnect; that extra ten minutes gave me much more confidence.
One minor troubleshooting moment happened during a cloudy week. The inverter stopped discharging at 30%, although the app still showed available capacity. I power-cycled the communications hub, waited five minutes, and restarted it. The issue disappeared, and it has not returned. I now keep the battery reserve at 25% rather than chasing every last kilowatt.
