I installed my solar battery last summer, mainly to stop buying expensive electricity during the evening peak. My setup uses a 5kW inverter, rooftop solar panels, and a battery built around lishen lifepo 280ah cells. I was nervous about the installation because the garage is already crowded, but the battery cabinet ended up taking less space than I expected. The installer mounted it against the wall, added a basic disconnect, and programmed the inverter to charge from solar first.
The biggest difference showed up after dinner. Before adding energy storage, my solar production disappeared as soon as the sun went down, and I relied heavily on grid power between 5 p.m. and 9 p.m. Now the battery usually carries the refrigerator, lights, Wi-Fi, television, and my heat-pump water heater through that period. On a normal summer day, I see roughly 8 to 12 kWh come from the battery instead of the grid. My monthly bill dropped by about $70 to $95, although the exact savings depend on weather and how much air conditioning we use.
I also like watching the battery monitoring app. It shows the state of charge clearly, so I can tell whether running the dishwasher overnight is sensible. I generally reserve 20 percent capacity because I do not want to drain the LiFePO4 battery completely, especially before a storm.
I had one minor troubleshooting moment in the first month. The battery stopped charging at midday, even though the panels were producing power. I discovered the inverter had entered a temperature-protection mode because the cabinet area was warmer than usual. After improving airflow and lowering the charge current slightly, everything returned to normal.
The system has not eliminated my electric bill, but it has made it much more predictable. For me, the practical benefit is using my own solar energy after sunset instead of selling it cheaply and buying it back later at peak rates.
