I installed a 10 kWh lithium iron phosphate battery (LiFePO4) beside my inverter last spring, and the biggest surprise was how quickly it changed my evening routine.
Before that, my solar panels exported most of their afternoon energy, while we bought expensive electricity between 4pm and 9pm. The installer set the battery to charge from midday solar and discharge during those peak hours. Now my dishwasher, heat-pump water heater, and cooking run mostly from stored power. My monthly bill dropped from roughly $185 to $110, depending on weather, even though our household usage barely changed. The savings are not dramatic every month, but the battery has made peak pricing much less painful.
The only hiccup came during a week of cloudy weather when the battery stopped discharging at 47%. I initially assumed it was broken, but the monitoring app showed a grid import limit caused by a firmware update. After contacting installer support, they had me restart the battery inverter and update a setting in the app. It resumed normal operation within about ten minutes. I appreciated that the system kept the house powered while I investigated; only the battery discharge was affected. Since then, I check the state of charge before unusually cloudy days and leave a little more grid reserve.
Before buying, I spent several evenings comparing “lithium phosphate batteries for sale” listings, warranty terms, usable capacity, and round-trip efficiency. The cheapest option was not attractive once I considered installation, a compatible battery inverter, and the cost of replacing equipment later. I chose a unit with a 10-year warranty and a conservative 80% depth-of-discharge setting. That leaves roughly 8 kWh available overnight, which is enough for our refrigerator, lights, internet gear, and normal cooking, but not the electric dryer and heat pump together.
The best part is that the battery feels boring most days. I do not think about it when the sun is out; I notice the lower bill. For me, that dependable peak-hour shifting has been more valuable than having a backup system alone.
