After I installed a 10-kWh battery last spring, my biggest hope was not energy independence; it was avoiding the expensive evening hours when our electricity rate jumps.
Our solar panels finish producing before dinner, so without storage we were sending cheap power to the grid and buying it back later at nearly three times the price. The installer mounted the battery in our garage and connected it to the inverter and existing solar system in one day. The installation was tidy, although getting Wi-Fi to the energy monitor took longer than expected.
I use the datamanager app to check state of charge and daily energy flow. The graphs are useful: I can see solar filling the battery around noon, then the battery carrying our refrigerator, heat-pump water heater, and lights after sunset. I set it to reserve 20% for outages, which feels like a compromise rather than chasing every last kilowatt-hour of savings.
The difference shows up on weekdays. Before the battery, our evening usage pushed the bill into the rate period. Now the battery discharges automatically from about 5:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m., and our monthly bill has dropped by roughly $55–$75, depending on weather and demand. I am not treating that estimate as a guaranteed payback, but seeing the reduction every month makes the investment feel practical.
One hiccup happened during a router replacement. The battery worked, but the app showed stale data and stopped updating its history. A power cycle and re-entering the Wi-Fi credentials fixed it in ten minutes. I appreciated that the battery continued powering the house while the connection was down; the problem was visibility, not backup power.
After several months, I am satisfied. Maybe it will take years to fully pay for itself, but peak-hour bill savings and use of electricity are already noticeable.
