I installed my home solar battery last spring, mainly to stop giving away cheap midday power and buying it back during the evening peak. My rooftop system is 6 kW, paired with a 10 kWh lithium battery. I had previously searched for portable options, including a “lipo wohnmobil” battery, but I wanted a proper home energy storage system with a battery management system, wall mounting, and enough capacity for daily cycling.
The installation itself was less dramatic than I expected. The electrician finished in one day, although setting the inverter’s export limit took another visit. Once everything was configured, I set the battery to charge from solar only and discharge between 4 p.m. and 10 p.m., when our household normally uses the most electricity. That schedule has made the biggest practical difference.
Before adding storage, my evening cooking, dishwasher, lights, and heat-pump usage regularly pushed us into expensive grid rates. Now the battery usually covers those hours. On a sunny day, it reaches 100% by mid-afternoon, and I come home to see the house drawing 1–2 kW from stored solar instead of the grid. My monthly bill has fallen by roughly 30–40%, depending on weather and heating demand. I still import power overnight, but far less than before.
One small troubleshooting moment happened during a cloudy week. The battery stopped discharging at 20% even though I expected it to continue. I initially thought something had failed, but the reserve setting had been changed during a firmware update. I raised the usable discharge limit after checking the manual, and normal operation returned.
The best part is how unremarkable the system feels now. I check the monitoring app occasionally, but I no longer obsess over every solar watt. The battery quietly shifts my energy use into the hours when my panels are productive, and that simple change has made solar feel much more useful every day.
