I installed a home battery last spring after watching too much of my solar power disappear back to the grid during the evening. The deciding factor was not energy independence; it was the ugly peak rates from 4:00 to 9:00 p.m. My rooftop array fills the 13.5-kWh lithium-ion battery by late afternoon, and the inverter automatically carries the house through dinner, laundry, and breakfast overnight.
Before installation, our electric bill averaged about $185 monthly in summer. After the battery went live, the months landed between $110 and $125, despite running the air conditioner. That is roughly $60-$75 saved each month, because we stopped buying grid power at peak times. I did not expect the savings to feel dramatic, but seeing the lower utility statement each month has made the upfront cost feel increasingly reasonable to me.
The part is how little attention it needs. I set a reserve of 20% so there is backup for outages, but otherwise the energy management system decides when to charge and discharge. I can see solar production, battery state of charge, and consumption in the app, although I check it when I am curious.
One hiccup happened during a cloudy week: the battery stopped discharging at night and the app showed “standby.” I power-cycled the gateway, but that did nothing. Support asked me to check a tripped backup breaker; sure enough, the installer had left it slightly loose. Tightening it restored normal operation.

After nine months, capacity still feels unchanged, and our evening routine is noticeably cheaper and quieter than relying on the grid alone.
