I installed a 10-kWh home battery last spring, mainly because our utility had steep evening rates. Before that, my rooftop solar system sent most surplus power back to the grid during the day, then I bought electricity after dinner when the price was highest. The change to lithium iron phosphate batteries for solar storage has been surprisingly noticeable in ordinary daily life.
On sunny days, the battery usually reaches 100 percent by early afternoon. It runs our refrigerator, internet equipment, lights, and heat-pump water heater through the evening. I rarely think about it anymore; I just check the app occasionally and see the battery discharging instead of the grid meter climbing. Our monthly bill fell from roughly $180 to $95 during the first summer, despite using the air conditioner more than usual. It is not a perfect year-round result—cloudy weeks still require grid power—but peak-hour savings have been the biggest benefit.
The only hiccup came during a storm outage. The battery showed “standby” while the house was still connected to the utility. I initially assumed backup power had failed, but the transfer switch needed a firmware update. Support walked me through restarting the inverter and updating the gateway. After about fifteen minutes, the critical-load panel switched over, and our fridge and Wi-Fi stayed on. That scare taught me to test backup mode every few months instead of trusting the dashboard blindly.
I like that the battery is quiet; I hear the inverter fan occasionally. There is no fuel or maintenance, just an occasional state-of-charge check. For our household, it turns solar generation into power we use, not merely a credit on the bill. The app also lets me adjust reserve capacity, which helps protect backup power during stretches. I may add another battery eventually, but this capacity feels practical.
