I installed a lithium battery storage system last spring after getting tired of watching my evening electricity bill climb whenever the sun went down. My setup uses rooftop solar panels, a hybrid inverter, and a 10 kWh lifepo4 200ah zelle battery bank in the garage. I chose that capacity because our normal overnight load is fairly modest: refrigerator, Wi-Fi, a few lights, and sometimes the washing machine.
The biggest improvement has been peak-hour savings. My utility's expensive window runs from 4 to 9 p.m., exactly when we cook, run the dishwasher, and settle in with the television. Instead of pulling from the grid, the inverter draws from the fully charged solar battery. On sunny days, the panels refill it by mid-afternoon, so the cycle feels almost automatic.
Before storage, my summer bills averaged about $180. Since installing it, they have mostly landed between $75 and $95, even though our usage has not changed much. The exact savings vary with cloudy weather, but avoiding those evening rates makes the difference easy to see. I am not claiming the battery paid for itself overnight; I simply like seeing less energy wasted and having predictable backup power during short outages.
I did have one small troubleshooting moment. After a storm, the battery stopped discharging at night. The monitoring app showed a reserve setting I had accidentally raised to 80 percent. That meant the system was protecting a large emergency buffer instead of covering normal loads. I lowered the reserve to 25 percent, restarted the inverter, and everything worked normally the next evening. It was a useful reminder that battery capacity is only half the story; charge settings, inverter behavior, and household habits matter too.
I check the state of charge weekly; for me, this battery quietly shifts energy into cheaper hours at home.
