Running a solar battery at home has changed how I think about electricity bills. Before installing it, our rooftop solar system sent plenty of excess power to the grid during the afternoon, then we bought expensive electricity after dinner. The battery now captures that unused generation and carries us through the evening.
I paired a 5 kWh lithium battery with my growatt inverter 5000es. The installation was less dramatic than I expected. The installer mounted the battery in the garage, connected the battery storage system to the inverter, and spent most of the time checking settings and safety shutdowns. I mainly wanted a simple schedule: charge from solar during daylight and discharge during the utility peak period. After one week of monitoring, I adjusted the reserve level from 20% to 30%, because I preferred keeping some backup energy for a short outage.
The clearest difference appears on weekdays. We usually cook dinner, run the dishwasher, and use the heat pump between 5 and 9 p.m. Those used to be the most expensive hours. Now the solar battery supplies much of that load, and our evening grid consumption has fallen noticeably. My monthly bill is typically $45 to $70 lower, depending on weather and heating use. It is not a miracle that eliminates every charge, but the peak-hour savings are real.
I did have one minor troubleshooting moment. During a cloudy afternoon, the battery stopped charging at 86%. I initially thought the battery inverter had failed, but the monitoring app showed the reserve setting had been changed during a firmware update. Restoring the setting fixed it immediately.
What I appreciate most is the quiet, automatic operation. I check the app occasionally, but otherwise the energy storage system simply shifts my solar power to the hours when my household needs it most.
