I installed a 10 kWh home battery last spring, mainly because my utility’s peak rates had become impossible to ignore. My rooftop solar already covered much of our daytime use, but the excess power went to the grid for a small credit. After adding the battery, I could keep that energy and use it after dinner, when our electricity price nearly tripled. The system uses a lifepo4 topband navitas prismatic battery pack, paired with a hybrid inverter and a simple mobile monitoring app.
The biggest difference shows up between 4 p.m. and 9 p.m. On sunny days, the battery reaches 100 percent before lunch, then carries the refrigerator, Wi-Fi, lights, dishwasher, and heat-pump water heater through the expensive window. We used to average around $6 to $8 in evening electricity charges on workdays; now that portion is usually under $2. Our total monthly bill has fallen by roughly $85, though winter cloud cover reduces the savings. I still pull from the grid occasionally, but it is now a backup instead of the default.
My only real hiccup came during the first hot spell. The battery stopped discharging at 62 percent, even though the app showed a normal operating temperature. I checked the inverter settings, restarted the communications cable, and discovered the backup reserve had somehow been changed from 20 to 60 percent during a firmware update. Lowering it restored normal operation within minutes. That small scare taught me to check the reserve setting before assuming the battery or solar panels had failed. Since then, the lithium iron phosphate battery has been quiet, with no noticeable fan noise in the garage.
For me, the value is not just lower bills; it is having predictable energy at night. I watch the state of charge casually now, rather than obsessing over solar forecasts.
