I installed a 10-kWh battery alongside my rooftop solar system last spring, mostly because our evening electricity rates had become painful. Before that, my panels exported plenty of power during the afternoon, then I bought expensive grid electricity after dinner. The battery is built around lifepo4 solar batteries, and the main attraction for me was simple: store my excess solar instead of giving it away cheaply.

The setup was less dramatic than I expected. An installer mounted the battery in my utility room, connected it to the inverter, and configured it to charge from solar and discharge during my utility’s peak window. I spent an evening watching the monitoring app and changing the reserve level. I eventually settled on 20 percent, enough backup for short outages without sacrificing too much daily savings.

The difference showed up immediately on sunny days. By late afternoon, my battery usually reached 100 percent, and it carried the refrigerator, Wi-Fi, lights, and our heat-pump water heater through the expensive hours. My first full month with the battery was about $62 cheaper than the same month the previous year, despite similar weather and household habits. That is not a life-changing fortune, but it is a visible reduction on my bill. More importantly, I no longer feel annoyed when I see solar production peaking while everyone is away at work.

I did have one scare. In July, the app showed the battery at 0% even though the solar panels were producing normally. I checked the breaker and found that a firmware update had paused discharge operation. The battery was still charging, but the display had not refreshed correctly. After restarting the gateway and waiting about ten minutes, the state of charge returned. It was hardly a crisis, but it taught me not to rely blindly on the app.
