I installed a 10 kWh LiFePO4 solar battery in my garage last spring, mainly to stop buying so much electricity during the expensive evening hours. Before the battery, my rooftop solar system produced plenty of power at lunchtime, but I was exporting it cheaply and then paying much more after dinner. That felt wasteful.
The setup was simpler than I expected. The installer added a hybrid inverter, battery isolator, and energy meter, then connected everything to my existing solar panels. I spent the first week watching the monitoring app almost obsessively. On sunny days, the panels now charge the battery by early afternoon, and the stored energy runs my refrigerator, lights, internet equipment, and heat-pump water heater through the evening. I usually reach bedtime with between 20 and 35 percent remaining.
The biggest practical difference appears on my electricity bill. My household used to consume roughly 18 kWh from the grid each day in summer. After adding the battery, that dropped to around 5 or 6 kWh, mostly overnight. My utility’s peak rate starts at 4 p.m., so avoiding those hours saves more than simply increasing solar production would have. My monthly bill fell from about $185 to $78 during the first full summer month. Results vary with weather, but the change was immediately noticeable.
I did have one minor troubleshooting moment. During a cloudy week, the battery stopped charging at 92 percent. The app showed a temperature warning because the garage had become unusually cold overnight. I checked the ventilation and connections, restarted the inverter, and the system returned to normal once temperatures rose.
