A year ago, I added a 10 kWh solar battery to my rooftop system, mainly to stop buying expensive evening electricity. My installer recommended a maxpower unit, and the setup was less disruptive than I expected. The battery went beside the inverter in my garage, with a new energy meter and a phone app for monitoring solar production, state of charge, and household consumption.

The first week was mostly about learning the schedule. I set the battery to charge from excess solar after lunch and discharge between 4 p.m. and 10 p.m., when my utility’s time-of-use rate is highest. On sunny days, it usually reaches 95–100% before dinner. By bedtime, it is often around 25%, even after cooking, running the dishwasher, and using the heat pump. Before storage, those hours were when my electric meter seemed to spin fastest.

My bill has dropped by roughly $55 to $75 per month during the warmer months. That number varies with weather and our air-conditioning use, but the bigger improvement is seeing less grid consumption during peak hours. We still pull power from the utility overnight and on cloudy days, so I would not call the home energy storage system total independence. It has, however, made our solar panels much more useful after sunset.

I did have one small scare. The app showed the battery offline after a router update, but I could not see live data or change settings. Restarting the network gateway fixed it in about ten minutes. Since then, I check the physical status light rather than trusting the app alone.

After several months, the solar battery has been quiet, predictable, and easy to forget—in a good way. The savings are not dramatic every day, but they add up, and using my own solar power at dinner feels far better than exporting it cheaply.
