I installed a 10 kWh LiFePO4 home battery last spring, mainly because our evening electricity rates had become painful. Before that, our solar panels made plenty of power at noon, but we were still buying expensive grid electricity after dinner. I wanted a simple solar storage setup that would use our own energy later, not a complicated project.
The installation was easier than expected. A local electrician mounted the battery beside our inverter, added a backup gateway, and set the battery to charge from solar first. I spent an afternoon watching the app and changing the battery reserve level. I keep 20% reserved for outages, although we have only had one short interruption so far.
The biggest improvement is our peak-hour bill. Before installation, our household used the oven, heat-pump, dishwasher, and well pump after sunset, exactly when rates climbed. Now the battery covers those loads until around 10:30, and our grid consumption has dropped noticeably. Our monthly bill fell from roughly $180 to $75-$90, depending on weather. That is not a miracle; our panels still do most of the work, but shifting solar energy into evening hours makes the savings feel real. During sunny months, we often finish with enough charge to run the refrigerator, lights, router, and circulation pump overnight.
I did have a minor troubleshooting moment in August. I noticed the battery stopped charging at 92%, even though the app showed strong solar production. After checking the settings, I found that the inverter had switched to a conservative temperature mode during a very hot afternoon. The manual recommended ventilation, so I cleared boxes away from the equipment and lowered the charge current temporarily. It resumed normally the next morning. That experience also taught me not to panic over one strange graph.
