Solution Solar Battery DIY Parts
I installed a 10kWh LiFePO4 solar battery in my garage last spring, mainly to stop buying expensive evening electricity from the grid. My rooftop panels already covered most daytime use, but the battery changed how I used that energy.
The setup was less intimidating than I expected. The installer mounted the battery beside the hybrid inverter, connected it to the solar array and main panel, and configured a 20% reserve for outages. While reading the documentation, I learned that the lifepo4 bms 4s arrangement is a four-cell series battery management setup, not some mysterious marketing label. This helped me understand why the app shows individual cell voltage and temperature readings.
During sunny days, my panels usually fill the battery by early afternoon. Once the battery reaches its target, I let the house run from stored power until about 10:30 p.m., when cheaper overnight rates begin. Before storage, my air conditioner, water heater, and cooking all hit the expensive 4-to-9-p.m. window. Now the inverter quietly carries those loads, and grid consumption during peak hours has dropped dramatically.
My last utility bill was $78, compared with $146 during a similar month last year. Weather was not identical, so I do not pretend the battery caused every dollar of that difference, but the savings are obvious. On sunny weeks, I estimate I save roughly $2.50 to $4 each day by avoiding peak pricing.
The only hiccup came during a heatwave. The app showed the battery at 100%, yet the inverter refused to discharge. I found that the backup reserve had accidentally been raised to 100% after a firmware update. Lowering it back to 20% fixed the problem immediately; no wiring changes were needed. I now check the app after updates rather than assuming everything stayed the same.
Overall, the solar battery has been boring in the best possible way: it works quietly.
