I installed a 10kWh battery storage system last spring, pairing it with my rooftop solar panels and hybrid inverter. The main reason was simple: my electricity bill kept jumping after sunset, especially when the heat pump and induction cooker ran during peak hours. I chose a lifepo4 deep cycle battery because I wanted usable capacity, a long cycle life, and less maintenance than the old lead-acid setup I had briefly considered.
Setup was less dramatic than I expected. My installer mounted the battery in the garage, connected the battery management system, and configured it to charge from solar first and discharge between 4 p.m. and 9 p.m. I spent the first week watching the app far too often, but the energy flow view quickly became useful. On sunny days, my panels filled the battery by mid-afternoon. Once the evening rate started, the house quietly switched to stored energy instead of pulling from the grid.
The savings were noticeable, not magical. Before storage, my monthly bill in summer was usually around $210. After installation, it averaged $128 over the next three months, despite similar weather and usage. That is roughly $82 less per month, mostly because I avoided expensive peak electricity. On cloudy days, the battery still helped, although it sometimes reached empty before bedtime. I learned to schedule the dishwasher and clothes dryer for late morning, when solar production was available, rather than expecting the battery to cover everything.
I did have one scare. The app showed a battery communication warning after a router update. I power-cycled the inverter and restarted the gateway, but the warning returned. The installer eventually updated the firmware remotely, and the system has been stable since. I now check the dashboard once a week, not obsessively. For me, the biggest win is predictable evening power.
