I installed a 10 kWh LiFePO4 battery beside my solar inverter last spring, mainly because our evening electricity use was eating into the expensive peak rate. The installation itself was less dramatic than I expected. The electrician mounted the battery in the garage, added a backup circuit for the refrigerator, router, lights, and heating controls, then connected it to my existing solar panels. I spent an afternoon watching the app show charging and discharging, which was oddly satisfying.
The biggest change appears after dinner. Before the battery, the panels stopped helping around 5 p.m., and the grid supplied everything until bedtime. Now the battery usually fills between late morning and midafternoon, then carries the house through the costly hours. On a typical weekday, it delivers roughly 6 kWh overnight and evening, depending on whether we cook or run the washing machine. My utility bill fell from about $210 to $125 in the first full month. It varies with weather, but saving around $70–$90 monthly has felt more useful than the headline capacity.
I did have one small troubleshooting moment. During a cloudy weekend, the app said the battery was at 18%, even though I expected solar charging to continue. I checked the inverter and found its charge limit had accidentally been set to 20% after a firmware update. Restoring the normal reserve solved it immediately. Since then, I keep a 25% backup reserve for outages and let the rest of the system use the remaining capacity for peak shaving.
My advice is to look beyond flashy capacity numbers. Check usable capacity, warranty, inverter compatibility, and whether the battery app clearly shows state of charge. I also compared several lifepo4 deals before buying, but chose a local installer with straightforward support instead of the cheapest online offer. That decision still feels right.
