0nly after adding a home battery to my solar setup did I realize how much I was paying for electricity after sunset. My roof has modest panels and a 10kw growatt inverter, but before the battery, solar energy disappeared once evening arrived.
The biggest change is during peak hours. Our utility charges noticeably more from late afternoon until bedtime, so I now charge the lithium battery with excess solar around lunchtime and run the house from stored power later. The difference is especially obvious when cooking dinner, running the dishwasher, and using air conditioning at once. On sunny weekdays, my evening grid use has dropped close to zero. My monthly bill is typically $45–$70 lower than last summer, although rates and weather still move the number around.
I also noticed the battery feels more valuable than the headline savings suggest during outages. A brief storm outage last month shut off the neighborhood, but my essential circuits stayed on without any drama. I kept the refrigerator, Wi-Fi, a few lights, and my office computer running. The automatic transfer was quick enough that I only noticed the inverter screen change.
There was one small troubleshooting moment. One morning the monitoring app showed battery charging at zero even though sunlight was strong. I checked the breakers and found the battery isolator had been switched off accidentally while cleaning nearby. Turning it back on fixed everything, and charging resumed within a few minutes. I now keep a label beside that switch and glance at the state of charge before assuming something expensive has failed.
For me, the best part is controlling electricity purchases. I set an outage reserve and let the solar battery handle normal evening demand. It quietly cuts peak usage and makes my panels useful long after sunset, without much effort.
