Solution Solar Battery DIY Parts
2 summers ago, I installed a 10kWh lithium solar battery beside my inverter, and the change to our household electricity routine was more noticeable than I expected. Before storage, our rooftop solar often produced plenty at noon, but we sent the surplus back to the grid and bought power again after dinner. Now the battery charges between late morning and afternoon, then runs the refrigerator, lights, Wi-Fi, and television through the expensive evening hours.
My first full month was the real test. Our utility bill dropped from roughly $185 to $72, even though we had several cloudy days. The biggest saving came from avoiding peak-hour rates, not from generating more electricity. I check the battery state of charge in the app most mornings; seeing it refill overnight from 22% to 70% gives me a surprisingly useful picture of our habits.
Setup was straightforward, although I initially overcomplicated the small backup circuit. I bought a “12v lithium battery 20ah charger” for a separate camping battery, then realized it was not appropriate for the home battery bank. That mistake taught me to match charger voltage, chemistry, and current carefully.
The only troubleshooting moment happened during a three-day stretch of rain. The system stopped discharging at midnight, and I assumed the inverter had failed. It turned out that reserve mode was set to 40% instead of 20%. After changing that setting, the battery supplied our essential loads normally. I now leave a higher reserve before storms, but use most stored solar energy on ordinary nights.
After six months, the battery still holds its charge reliably. I am not completely energy independent, but our solar plus storage setup feels practical: lower daily bills, fewer peak purchases, and backup power when the neighborhood loses electricity. For me, that is the value of a home battery system.
