6 months ago, I added a 10kWh lithium battery to my rooftop solar system, mainly to avoid buying expensive evening electricity. Before the battery, my panels produced plenty of power during the day, but my family was usually at work or school. We exported the surplus and then paid the highest rates after dinner. That always felt backwards.
The biggest improvement has been peak-hour bill savings. I programmed the battery to charge from solar until about 3 p.m., then discharge from 4 p.m. until bedtime. On a typical sunny day, it runs our refrigerator, lights, television, Wi-Fi, and washing machine without pulling much from the grid. My monthly bill dropped from roughly $180 to between $75 and $95, depending on the weather. That is not a dramatic zero-dollar bill, but saving around $80 every month feels very real.
I did have one small troubleshooting moment during the first week. The battery stopped discharging at 20 percent, even though I expected it to use nearly the full capacity. I initially thought the inverter or solar battery was faulty. After checking the app, I discovered that the reserve setting had been left at 20 percent for backup protection. I changed it to 10 percent, and the system immediately behaved as expected. I now keep 15 percent reserved because short outages are fairly common here.
I also bought a 060v lithium battery charger for occasional maintenance charging, although I have barely needed it. The solar charge controller and hybrid inverter have handled normal charging reliably.
The battery is quiet, and I have not noticed any unusual heat in the garage. My main practical advice is to study your utility’s time-of-use rates before choosing settings. The storage capacity matters, but using it at the right hours matters more. For me, shifting solar power into the evening has made the whole system noticeably more useful.
