I installed a 10-kWh lithium iron phosphate battery last spring, mainly because our evening electricity rates had become painful. My system uses lifepo4 cells 120ah modules, a hybrid inverter, and the existing rooftop solar panels.
The biggest difference showed up after sunset. During sunny days, the panels charge the battery to around 95% by mid-afternoon. At 4 p.m., instead of pulling power from the grid, my house quietly runs from stored energy. It covers the refrigerator, Wi-Fi, lights, television, and sometimes the dishwasher. I set the battery to stop discharging at 20%, so there is a reserve for outages.
Before storage, our utility bill averaged about $180 during hot months, largely because we cooked and ran air conditioning after work. This summer, with the same household habits, it dropped to roughly $95. The exact savings vary with weather and battery charge level, but shifting evening consumption has been surprisingly effective. I do still buy grid electricity overnight when the battery is empty, yet peak-hour usage is much lower.
One small troubleshooting moment happened in July. The inverter showed a battery communication warning after a brief outage. I power-cycled the inverter, checked the cable plugs, and found one connector had loosened slightly inside the utility closet. After reseating it, the warning disappeared and the battery resumed charging. I added a simple label to each cable afterward; that five-minute fix taught me not to assume every fault needs a replacement part.
What I appreciate most is the quiet, predictable routine. The battery has no noticeable noise. The app shows solar generation, state of charge, and daily consumption. It did not make us energy independent; cloudy weeks still require grid power. But for sunny weeks, the storage system has turned excess midday solar into nighttime savings, and that is why I’d install it again.
