I installed a 10 kWh home battery last spring, mostly because my electricity bills were getting painful during the evening peak. My rooftop solar already covered much of the daytime load, but without storage I was still sending cheap midday power to the grid and buying it back after dinner.
The difference showed up almost immediately. I set the solar battery to charge from surplus solar and discharge between 4 p.m. and 9 p.m. On a typical sunny day, it now runs the refrigerator, lights, Wi-Fi, television, and part of my cooking. My first full month ended with a bill of $38, compared with $94 the previous month, even though our usage was pretty similar. It is not a dramatic zero-dollar bill, but the peak-hour savings are real and predictable. I especially notice it when the air conditioner is running.
One small surprise was how much planning my garage outlets needed. I sometimes charge an electric bike overnight, and the cable for my lithium ion 72v electric bike battery charger initially shared a circuit with a freezer. When both started at once, the battery inverter briefly complained about overload and paused output. Nothing was damaged, but I moved the charger to another circuit and lowered its charging schedule. Since then, the system has been completely uneventful.
The useful information is the daily solar production, state of charge, and how much grid electricity I avoided during expensive hours. During a cloudy week, the battery still helped, but I had to buy more power overnight. That made the limitations clear: storage shifts energy; it does not create it.
For me, the best part is less bill anxiety. I hear the inverter occasionally, and maintenance has been minimal overall. After several months, this solar-plus-storage setup feels less like exciting technology and more like dependable household equipment.
