I installed a 10-kWh unit from a lifepo4 cell supplier beside my inverter last spring to stop buying expensive evening electricity. My rooftop solar already covered daytime loads, but our cooking, laundry, and heat-pump use happened after sunset, when the tariff jumped.

The setup was less intimidating than I expected. An electrician mounted the battery indoors, connected it to the hybrid inverter, and programmed a 20% reserve so I would not drain it completely. I did have to choose a location; the battery is quiet, but the inverter makes a brief hum when charging hard.

After setup, I watched the monitoring app obsessively for the first week. On sunny days, solar panels usually fill the battery by mid-afternoon. Then the battery carries the refrigerator, Wi-Fi, lights, and our dishwasher through dinner. That shift has made the biggest difference to my bill.

Before installation, I averaged about $210 monthly during summer. Since switching to a time-of-use plan and using stored solar during peak hours, my summer bills have landed between $92 and $118. The battery does not eliminate grid use; cloudy stretches still force me to buy power, but watching peak consumption fall on the app is satisfying.

My best day was a bright Saturday when the system charged to 100% and we used the oven, washer, and air conditioner without pulling much from the grid.

I also had one troubleshooting moment in January. The battery showed “standby” even though the panels were producing. I checked the breaker, restarted the inverter communications gateway, and waited ten minutes. Nothing changed until I noticed the app had switched the operating mode from “self-consumption” to “backup-only” after a firmware update. Switching it back restored normal charging immediately.

That taught me to check settings before assuming hardware failure. Overall, I am very happy with it so far.
