Solution Solar Battery
6 months ago I added a 10 kWh solar battery storage system to my rooftop PV array, and the difference in my evening routine has been bigger than I expected. Before the installation, I sent surplus solar power back to the grid during the day, then bought electricity after dinner when rates were highest. Now the inverter charges the battery around noon and runs our refrigerator, lights, Wi-Fi, and heat-pump water heater through the peak period.
The setup was fairly painless, although I did spend an afternoon labeling cables and checking the battery management system settings. My unit uses 26650 lifepo4 cells, which appealed to me because I wanted lithium iron phosphate chemistry rather than a cheaper option with a shorter expected cycle life. I mounted the battery cabinet in the garage, kept clearances around it, and connected it to a hybrid inverter. The monitoring app took a day to understand, especially the difference between PV production, battery state of charge, and household load.
The most satisfying change is the peak-hour saving. On sunny days, the battery reaches about 95% before lunch. I set it to hold enough energy for the evening, then discharge from 4 p.m. until 9 p.m., when my utility rate jumps. My first full month showed a bill roughly 28% lower than the same month last year, despite running the air conditioner more often. That is not a dramatic zero-bill result, but it feels meaningful because the savings happen automatically every evening.
I did have one small troubleshooting moment. After a cloudy weekend, the battery stopped discharging at its programmed minimum reserve. The app showed an inverter warning, and I initially assumed the battery was failing. It turned out I had accidentally enabled backup-only mode while exploring settings. Switching it back restored normal operation that evening.
