I installed a 13.5-kWh home battery last summer, and the change I notice most is what happens between 4 and 9 p.m. Before the battery, our electric meter seemed to sprint whenever we cooked dinner, ran the dishwasher, or turned on the air conditioner. Those were our utility’s expensive peak hours, so even with solar panels, I was still buying power at the worst time.
Now the battery stores excess solar energy during the afternoon and quietly feeds the house after sunset. I changed the settings to reserve twenty percent for outages, then set it to discharge during peak pricing. On sunny days, we usually reach full charge by early afternoon. By bedtime, the state of charge is often around thirty to forty percent.
Our first full month bill dropped from $186 to $119. That’s not a dramatic whole-home transformation, but saving about $67 was noticeable, especially because our usage didn’t change much. In milder weather, there is less air conditioning demand. I check the monitoring app most mornings, but I don’t obsess over every graph anymore.
The only hiccup came during a heatwave. The battery stopped discharging at 62%, despite the app showing a normal schedule. I found that backup reserve had somehow been changed to 60% after a firmware update. I lowered it back to 20%, rebooted the inverter, and everything worked that evening. The support technician confirmed the setting and emailed screenshots, which was reassuring.
Living with a big battery has also made me more deliberate about solar use. I run laundry around noon, but I no longer panic when clouds roll in. The system covers our evening essentials most nights, and during a power outage it kept the refrigerator, router, and a few lights running. For me, that combination matters. The peace of mind feels worthwhile.
