Running my evening routine around a solar battery changed more than I expected. Before installing it, I watched the utility meter spin quickly after dinner, when our heat pump, dishwasher, and lights all came on. Now the inverter uses daytime solar energy to charge the battery, and the stored power carries us through the expensive evening hours.

My setup is built around a growatt 5500 inverter with a 10 kWh lithium iron phosphate battery. The installation itself was fairly painless: the installer mounted the battery in the garage, labeled the shutdown switch, and walked me through the monitoring app. I especially like seeing the battery state of charge.

The noticeable saving comes between 4 and 9 p.m., when electricity rates are highest. I set the system to reserve twenty percent for outages and discharge the rest during peak pricing. Our first complete month with the battery cut the electric bill from $214 to $137. Although cloudy weather made the result less dramatic. I am not treating those figures as guaranteed savings; heating demand, utility rates, and seasonal solar production all matter. Still, watching fewer peak-hour imports has been satisfying, especially because the battery charges mostly from solar rather than the grid.

I did have one small troubleshooting scare. After a firmware update, the app showed “battery offline” even though the inverter screen showed normal operation. I checked the Wi-Fi connection, restarted the monitoring dongle, and waited about ten minutes. The data returned, with no lost energy and no electrician visit needed. That moment taught me to check the physical display before assuming the battery had failed.

For my house, this solar storage system is less about chasing independence and more about making everyday energy use predictable. The practical win is avoiding costly evening electricity whenever the sun has given us enough charge.
