Solution Solar Battery
Once we installed our solar backup power system last spring, I wanted quieter evenings during outages. We chose a 10-kilowatt-hour lithium-ion battery paired with our existing rooftop solar panels, and the biggest surprise was how quickly it changed our routine.
Before the battery, I watched the electricity app and tried to run the dishwasher or washing machine at midday. Now the battery stores excess solar energy and carries us through the evening peak period. That has made a difference on our bills. Our utility charges the highest rates from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m., which used to be when we cooked dinner, ran the heat pump, and charged devices. After installation, our monthly bill dropped from roughly $185 to $72—not every month is identical, but the pattern has held for six months.
The most satisfying part is checking the monitoring app in the morning and seeing that we used almost no grid power overnight. On cloudy days, it may stop around 60%, so I have learned not to judge its performance from one day. The system automatically switches between solar, battery, and grid power without drama.
I did have one troubleshooting moment in January. The battery showed a communication warning after our router restarted during a storm. Solar generation continued, but the app stopped displaying battery percentage. I power-cycled the gateway, waited five minutes, and reconnected the network. The warning disappeared, and the stored energy was still available. That was reassuring because I had worried the battery had failed.
I think of the battery less as a gadget. It does not eliminate the electric bill, and winter production will test the savings, but shifting solar energy into peak hours has already paid off some of the installation cost. For me, the win is predictable evening power and knowing our refrigerator, lights, and internet will keep running when the grid drops.
