Solution Solar Inverter
Last spring, I installed a 10 kWh home battery beside my solar inverter, and the biggest surprise has been how much calmer our evenings feel. Before the battery, our solar panels stopped helping as soon as the sun went down. We cooked dinner, ran the dishwasher, and charged phones while pulling expensive electricity from the grid. Now the battery stores our midday surplus and carries most of the house through the peak-rate window.
The difference shows up clearly on my bill. My utility charges its highest rate from 4 to 9 p.m. On sunny days, I usually reach that window with the battery at 90 to 100 percent. By bedtime, it is often around 35 percent, even after cooking with the induction hob and running a 2.5 kW heat-pump water heater. My first full month with the system cut the bill by about $70. That feels more meaningful than the app’s graphs.
I did have one minor troubleshooting moment. During a cloudy week, the battery reached its reserve setting earlier than expected, and our evening electricity use switched to the grid. I initially thought the solar battery was failing. The monitoring app showed the real issue: I had accidentally set the backup reserve to 60 percent while experimenting with settings. Dropping it back to 25 percent fixed the problem immediately. I now leave a little more reserve before storms, but otherwise let the battery manage itself.
The unit is an aliant system, and installation was tidy enough that it disappeared into the utility room. It is quiet, predictable, and most valuable when electricity prices are high. I still watch production and state of charge, but I no longer obsess over every cloud. For me, energy storage has turned unused solar power into practical evening savings, which is why I bought it.
