I installed my home solar battery last summer, mainly to stop buying so much electricity during the expensive evening hours. My rooftop solar system already covered most daytime use, but the air conditioner, cooking, and water heater pushed our household into the highest tariff period. Adding a 10 kWh LiFePO4 battery changed that pattern immediately.
The installation was less dramatic than I expected, although balancing the battery cells took patience. My installer used a BMS and checked each cell before commissioning. I also learned enough to understand why a lifepo4 balancer 8s is useful in smaller battery packs: keeping the cell voltages even matters more than simply watching the total battery voltage. My system is a larger 16-cell pack, but that search taught me a lot about battery balancing and safe charging.
On a normal sunny day, the solar panels run the house first, then charge the battery. Around 4 p.m., the battery starts supplying power, and it usually carries us through the evening peak until about 10 p.m. Before storage, my summer electricity bill averaged roughly $180 per month. After installation, it fell to about $105, even though our usage stayed fairly similar. That is not a perfect monthly saving because cloudy weather and utility rate changes still make a difference, but the improvement is obvious.
My only real troubleshooting moment happened during the first week. The battery stopped discharging at night because the inverter temperature sensor showed an error. I found a loose communication cable, reseated it, and restarted the system. It has been stable since then.
What I appreciate most is seeing less electricity pulled from the grid on the monitoring app. I do not obsess over daily graphs, but it is satisfying to watch solar energy cover dinner, laundry, and cooling after sunset. The battery was a serious upfront expense, yet the quieter bills and extra backup power have made the investment feel practical rather than flashy.
