I installed a lifepo4 48v 100ah battery in my garage last spring, to stop buying evening electricity from the grid. My rooftop solar array is 4.8kW, so I was not expecting miracles. What surprised me was how much calmer my energy routine became.
The battery charges through the morning, reaching full by around two o'clock on a sunny day. After dinner, it runs the refrigerator, internet equipment, lights, washing machine, and my induction cooktop. Before storage, those loads pulled power during the utility's peak window, when our rate is three times the overnight rate. Now the inverter draws from the battery until about midnight, then switches to the grid.
My evening usage used to cost roughly $1.40. Since adding this solar battery, that portion is closer to thirty or forty cents, depending on how cloudy the day was. Our monthly bill dropped from around $185 to $112 over the summer month. I know weather and air-conditioning habits affect the comparison, but the peak-hour savings are obvious on the utility statement.
The useful detail has been the battery's state-of-charge display. I set a 25 percent reserve for outages, and I can see how much remains from my phone. During a rainy week, the battery never reached 100 percent. It still covered dinner and bedtime, but I adjusted the dishwasher to run at noon rather than pretending the system had unlimited capacity.
Installation was straightforward but not casual. I had an electrician add the hybrid inverter, battery disconnect, and a critical-loads panel. The battery itself is quiet; I mostly hear the inverter's fan when charging hard. After six months, there are no smells, leaks, or performance losses. For my home, this lithium iron phosphate storage setup is less about energy independence and more about using solar power when it saves money.
