.After six months with my home solar battery, I finally stopped watching evening electricity prices with a knot in my stomach. The system is a modest 10-kWh lithium battery paired with 6.5-kW of rooftop solar, and that size has proved practical for my household.
My installer mounted the battery beside the garage and connected it to a hybrid inverter; no rewiring was needed, although getting Wi-Fi monitoring working took two visits. Once the settings were sorted, I set the battery to charge from solar during the day and discharge between 4:00 and 9:00 p.m., when my utility charges its highest time-of-use rate. That schedule made the biggest difference.
On sunny days, the battery usually reaches 100 percent by lunchtime. I run the oven, dishwasher, and heat pump from stored energy instead of buying expensive grid power. My monthly bill fell from about $210 in summer to roughly $125, despite similar air-conditioning use. In cloudier months, savings are smaller, but the battery still cuts my evening demand noticeably. I am not pretending it eliminated my bill; the fixed connection fee remains, and winter solar production is limited. Still, saving around $80–$100 monthly feels tangible.
My only scare came during a storm. The app showed “standby” while the house was drawing from the grid, even though the battery displayed 62% charge. I checked the breaker and found it had tripped after a brief outage. Resetting it restored operation, but I learned that backup power was not automatic for every circuit. The installer later moved my refrigerator and internet equipment onto the backup load panel. Now a short outage keeps the lights, router, and fridge running, though I avoid switching on the kettle and microwave together.
A 3.2 aa battery may suit a small home, but capacity should match daily habits and usage.
