I installed my home battery last spring, mainly to stop sending cheap midday solar power back to the grid and buying it again during expensive evening hours. My system uses 16 lifepo4 280ah grad a exli cells assembled into a 48-volt battery bank.
Setup was simpler than I expected. The inverter and charge controller were already compatible, and I spent an afternoon mounting the battery cabinet, pulling cable, and checking every terminal twice. I did hire an electrician for final connections and inspection, but the actual monitoring setup took only about ten minutes.
The best change is what happens between 4:00 and 9:00 p.m. Before storage, my heat pump, induction hob, lights, and television pushed my household into the highest tariff period. Now the battery carries most of that load. On a normal sunny day, the solar panels charge it to around 95% by late afternoon, and I usually go to bed with 35% to 45% remaining.
That reserve is enough to cover overnight essentials without draining the pack completely. My electricity bill fell from roughly $185 per month to $112 over the first three months, despite similar weather and usage. The savings are not dramatic every day, especially when clouds arrive, but avoiding those peak rates feels very predictable.
My favorite practical feature is the app’s simple energy graph. It shows solar generation, battery charging, and household consumption in separate colors, so I can tell whether a bad day came from low sunlight or from our teenager leaving the gaming PC on.
I did have one minor troubleshooting moment in July. The battery stopped charging at 62% because a communication cable had loosened slightly inside the cabinet. I shut down the inverter, reseated it, and restarted everything according to the manual. Monitoring returned within minutes, with no error afterward whatsoever today. It worked.
