5kw sunsynk hybrid inverter

Keeping our evening electricity use off the grid was the main reason I installed a solar battery system, and after several months, that is where I have noticed the biggest difference. My setup uses a 5kw sunsynk hybrid inverter with a 10kWh lithium-ion battery, connected to 4.8kW of rooftop solar panels.

Before the battery, our solar production dropped away just as everyone came home. The kettle, oven, television, and heating would then run during the expensive evening tariff. Now, on a reasonably sunny day, the battery charges by early afternoon and supplies most of our household electricity from around 4pm until bedtime. I still import a little power on cloudy days, but our peak-hour usage has fallen dramatically. Our monthly bill is typically £35–£50 lower than it was last year, although the exact saving depends on weather, appliance use, and electricity prices.

One small troubleshooting moment happened during a particularly dull winter week. I noticed the battery was reaching its reserve level much earlier than expected, even though the inverter app showed some solar generation. After checking the settings, I found that the backup reserve had been set to 40%. That was useful during a power cut, but unnecessarily high for our normal routine. I reduced it to 20%, leaving enough emergency capacity while allowing more of the stored energy to be used each evening. The change made an immediate practical difference.

I like being able to see the solar panels, home load, battery storage, and grid import in real time through the monitoring app. It has made us more conscious of when we run the washing machine and dishwasher. The system is not completely hands-off—I occasionally check battery state of charge and adjust the schedule—but it has been reliable, quiet, and easy to live with. For me, the biggest win is using our own solar energy after sunset instead of buying it at peak rates.
