Solution Solar Battery
I installed a 10kWh home battery last spring, pairing it with my rooftop solar and a hybrid inverter. The battery is built around lifepo4 280ah docan cells, and my main reason for choosing it was to reduce the electricity I bought during expensive evening hours. Before storage, my panels sent plenty of power back to the grid at lunchtime, while our household cooked, showered, and ran the dishwasher after sunset.
The installation was less dramatic than I expected. My installer mounted the battery in the garage, added a disconnect switch, and programmed the energy management system to charge from solar first. I asked for a conservative reserve of 25%, so we would still have backup power if a storm knocked out the grid. The app took a couple of days to make sense, but now I can see solar production, battery state of charge, household consumption, and grid import without walking into the garage.
The biggest difference appears between 4:00 and 9:00pm. On sunny days, the battery reaches full charge around mid-afternoon. Once utility rates climb, it supplies the refrigerator, lights, Wi-Fi, television, and my induction cooktop. My first full month with storage cut grid purchases by roughly 55%, lowering the bill by about $68, despite using more air conditioning than the previous year. That number matters more to me than a theoretical payback calculator because it reflects our actual routine.
I did have one small troubleshooting moment. The battery stopped discharging one evening even though the app showed plenty of capacity. I found the inverter had entered a standby mode after a firmware update. A restart and a call to the installer fixed it, and the settings remained intact. Since then, performance has been steady, with no unusual heat or noise.
That practical shift has been the real win.
