0ver the past year, my rooftop solar setup has become much more useful since I added a 10kWh lithium battery. I mainly wanted to stop sending cheap daytime power back to the grid and buying it back during the evening peak.
Before installing it, my electricity bill averaged around $180 a month. With solar generation and battery storage, my last three bills have averaged $94 a month. The biggest difference appears between 4pm and 9pm, when utility rates are highest. The inverter automatically switches to battery power at the start of that window, so I rarely notice anything except the lower meter reading. On a sunny day, my battery reaches 100 percent by lunchtime. I usually still have 30 to 40 percent left at bedtime, which gives me comfortable backup overnight.
When I was shopping, I spent weeks comparing the 200ah lithium battery price, usable capacity, warranty, and battery management system rather than choosing the cheapest listing. The price mattered, but installation and compatibility mattered more. My installer checked the solar inverter and fitted a hybrid inverter with cable routing. The installation took a day, and the monitoring app was working.
I did have one minor troubleshooting moment in winter. After several cloudy days, the battery stopped charging above 62 percent. I initially blamed the solar panels, but the app showed a high reserve setting left over from a grid outage test. Lowering that reserve to 20 percent restored normal charging the next morning. Since then, I check the state of charge weekly and keep the reserve at 30 percent during storm season.
For me, the real win is not independence from the grid; it is using more of my own solar electricity and avoiding expensive peak rates. The battery has made our solar system feel practical every day.
