I installed a solar battery system last spring, mainly to stop buying expensive evening electricity. My roof already had eight panels, but without storage, much of their daytime production went back to the grid for a small credit.
I chose a 10 kWh lithium battery with a high capacity 12v bms, although my installer actually configured it as a 48V home battery bank. The phrase sounds odd in the paperwork, but the battery management system has been reassuringly boring, which is exactly what I wanted.
Setup took most of a Saturday. The electrician mounted the battery in the garage, ran new conduit to the inverter, and added a transfer switch for essential circuits. I was surprised how quiet it is; from the kitchen I hear only a faint click when charging begins. I left the default settings alone for the first week and watched the solar monitoring app.
By lunchtime, solar power usually filled the battery, and at 4 p.m. the system stopped exporting and started holding energy for dinner, lights, and our heat pump. That simple change has made the biggest difference to my bill.
Before storage, our summer electric bill averaged about $180. After adding the battery, the last three bills were $112, $119, and $126, despite running the air conditioner during peak-rate hours. I am not claiming the battery erased my bill—cloudy days still force some grid usage—but shifting stored solar to 5–9 p.m. has saved roughly $55 to $70 monthly.
I did have a small scare in July. The monitoring app showed the battery at 2% before sunrise, and the inverter beeped twice. I checked the manual, found the reserve had been accidentally changed from 20% to 5% during a firmware update, and restored it in two minutes. It has worked reliably since then.
