I installed a 14 kWh home battery last autumn, built around a lifepo4 280ah calb bank and a 5 kW hybrid inverter. My main reason was simple: our evening electricity use was pushing us into the expensive peak tariff every night.
The setup was less intimidating than I expected. An electrician mounted the battery in the garage, added a DC disconnect, and programmed the inverter to charge from solar during the day and discharge after 4 p.m. I settled on 20 percent, which leaves enough backup power without wasting much capacity.
The first full week showed the biggest difference for us at home. Before storage, our grid meter climbed quickly while cooking, running the heat pump, and charging an electric car. Now the battery handles that whole stretch. My evening peak usage fell from roughly 9 kWh to under 1 kWh on sunny days. That has cut my monthly bill by about $70 in spring and closer to $35 during cloudy winter months.
I did have one minor troubleshooting moment. After a firmware update, the battery stopped discharging at night and sat at 100 percent until morning. The app showed “standby,” although solar production was normal. I power-cycled the inverter and checked the time-of-use schedule; the update had reset the discharge window. Restoring the schedule fixed it immediately. Since then, I glance at the monitoring app every few days, but I no longer worry about it.
For me, the best part is quiet practicality. There is no daily noise, no fuel, and no special routine beyond checking the state of charge occasionally. The solar battery simply shifts my daytime solar power into the hours when electricity costs more. I would expand it only if our electric car use grows, but this current lifepo4 setup already feels like a sensible investment.
