I installed a 10kWh lithium iron phosphate battery beside my garage last spring, after getting tired of watching our electricity bill jump every evening. The system is paired with our rooftop solar panels through a hybrid inverter, and the biggest difference has been what happens between 4pm and 9pm.
Before the solar battery, we exported most of our midday generation for very little credit, then bought power back when cooking dinner, running the heat pump, and charging our car. Now the battery stores that excess energy and covers nearly everything during those expensive peak hours. On sunny weekdays, I often see the house pull from stored power until bedtime, with only a small grid draw afterward.
That has cut our monthly bill by roughly $45–$70, depending on weather and how much laundry we do. It is not a dramatic overnight miracle, but the savings are consistent, and I especially notice them in winter when peak rates are painful.
The setup was easier than I expected. Our installer mounted the battery, connected the battery management system, and walked me through the monitoring app. I chose not to hide it in a tight closet because I wanted clear access to the disconnect and ventilation area. The app shows solar production, home consumption, battery state of charge, and grid import in real time.
My favorite routine is checking it around sunset. If the battery is above 80%, I know we can get through the evening comfortably. If clouds have limited charging, I switch off the clothes dryer and delay the dishwasher until late morning. That small habit matters almost as much as the hardware.
I never built a DIY battery pack kit, choosing professional installation for safety. I had a hiccup when the monitoring app went offline after a router update; the battery kept working.
