I installed a 10kWh home battery last spring after watching my evening electricity bills climb. The system uses LiFePO4 chemistry, and the pack is built around lifepo4 18650 cells. I paired it with my rooftop solar inverter, mainly to store surplus power instead of exporting it for very little credit.
The biggest difference showed up between 4pm and 9pm. I used to run the dishwasher, heat pump, and kitchen appliances right after work, when grid rates were highest. Now the battery takes over automatically once solar production drops. On a typical sunny day, it covers those loads until bedtime, and my monthly bill fell from roughly $180 to $115. The exact savings vary with weather, but avoiding peak-hour electricity has been more valuable than I expected.
I did have one small troubleshooting moment during the first month. The battery stopped discharging at 20%, even though the app showed plenty of stored energy. I discovered the backup reserve setting had been changed during a firmware update. After restoring the reserve to 10% and restarting the inverter, it worked normally. That little scare taught me not to trust the dashboard blindly; I now check the battery temperature, state of charge, and error notifications every few days.
What I appreciate most is the quiet, hands-off operation. There is no fuel, no generator noise, and the solar storage system keeps essential circuits running during brief outages. I do not consider it a magic bill eraser—winter clouds still hurt production, and battery efficiency means I cannot use every stored watt-hour. Still, the daily peak-rate savings make sense for my household, and I expect the lithium battery to pay back gradually.
If I were starting again, I would spend time comparing inverter monitoring features and installer warranties.
