My goal was simple: use solar power during the day, store the excess, and avoid buying electricity during my utility's peak period. The setup took most of a weekend. Mounting the battery was straightforward, but configuring the inverter's charging schedule took several attempts because the menu labels were not especially clear.

The biggest practical difference appears between four and nine in the evening. Before storage, my air conditioner, cooking, and water heater pushed our bill sharply at those hours. Now I let the battery carry most of that load. On a normal sunny day, it reaches full charge around lunchtime, and I usually see the inverter drawing from the battery after dinner instead of the grid.

My monthly bill dropped from about $180 to $112 over the hottest months. The exact savings vary with clouds and air conditioning, but avoiding those peak rates is noticeable. I also changed the battery reserve setting to 25% after one minor scare.

A stormy afternoon left the panels producing little, and I accidentally ran the dryer while the battery was nearly empty. The inverter shut down at its reserve threshold, which briefly interrupted the router. I raised the reserve to 35% and now check the state of charge before using heavy appliances. Since then, it has been boringly reliable.

I am not completely off-grid, and I still use grid electricity overnight during long cloudy stretches.
