Our household installed a 10-kWh lithium iron phosphate battery last spring to stop buying expensive evening electricity. Before that, our solar panels produced plenty during the day, but we sent it back to the grid for a credit and then paid full price after dinner.

The installer mounted the battery in the garage, connected it to the inverter, and added a controlador solar to coordinate charging from the panels. I spent the first week watching the app. On days, the battery reaches 95 percent by mid-afternoon. At 4 p.m., it switches from charging to covering the house, so the dishwasher, refrigerator, lights, and heat pump run on stored solar instead of peak-rate power.

That change has made the difference to our bill. Our utility’s evening rate is roughly three times the daytime rate. In summer, our bill fell from about $185 to $72, even though we used the air conditioner more than the year. Winter savings are smaller because short, cloudy days leave less energy to store, but the battery still cuts the dinner-time spike. I estimate it saves us $70 to $110 a month, depending on weather and rates.

I did have one scare. The app showed the battery at 12 percent before sunrise, and the system stopped discharging. I discovered that a firmware update had changed the reserve setting from 10 to 20 percent. After lowering the reserve, everything returned to normal. I now keep 20 percent during storm season for backup and use the capacity in weather.

What I appreciate most is the quiet, automatic operation. There is no maintenance, no fuel, and no noise beyond a inverter hum. I check the battery storage graph with my morning coffee, but I’m no longer guessing where our solar power went. It is finally working when we need it most.
