8 months ago I installed a 10kWh LiFePO4 battery beside my inverter, mainly to stop buying expensive evening electricity. My roof solar system is 6.6kW, and the battery has made a bigger difference than adding another couple of panels would have for our routine.
Setup was straightforward, but not completely plug-and-play. I mounted the battery on a small concrete pad, connected the communication cable, and spent an afternoon adjusting the inverter settings. The most important change was setting the battery to charge from solar first and discharge only during our utility company’s peak period. Before the battery, our cooking, laundry, and air-conditioning pushed the bill up between 4 p.m. and 9 p.m. Now the solar battery usually carries those loads.
Our average monthly bill has dropped from about $210 to between $125 and $145, depending on the weather. That is not a dramatic zero-dollar bill, but the savings are very noticeable. On sunny days, the battery reaches 100% by mid-afternoon, then runs the refrigerator, lights, Wi-Fi, and evening appliances until bedtime. During cloudy weeks, I let it stop at 20% rather than forcing a full discharge.
I did have one minor troubleshooting moment in the second month. The battery stopped charging at 82%, and I initially thought the cells were faulty. The actual problem was a conservative voltage setting in the inverter. After checking the manual and confirming the battery management system readings, I corrected the setting and charging returned to normal.
I also keep a smaller 24V backup battery for camping and occasional outages. A 28.8v lifepo4 battery charger has been useful for topping that pack up safely from a generator or wall outlet. Overall, the main benefit has been predictable peak-hour savings rather than complete energy independence. The system quietly does its job every day, and I rarely think about it now, which is exactly what I wanted.
