Running the dishwasher after dinner used to feel like I was throwing money at the utility company. Since installing a 10kWh lithium iron phosphate battery with my rooftop solar system, I have changed that routine. The battery charges from excess midday generation, then powers the house through the evening peak period.
My system uses a growatt hybrid inverter compatible battery, and the setup was less intimidating than I expected. The installer mounted the battery in the garage, connected it to the hybrid inverter, and programmed a 20% backup reserve. I watched the app for the first few days, mostly because I wanted to understand the energy flow rather than because anything was wrong.
The biggest practical difference shows up between 4pm and 9pm. Before, our grid meter climbed whenever the oven, lights, television, and heat-pump water heater ran together. Now, solar battery storage covers most of that load. On sunny days, the battery reaches full charge before lunch and usually still has 35–45% remaining at bedtime. My evening grid use has fallen noticeably, and my monthly electricity bill dropped around 30% compared with the same months last year, even after rates increased.
There was one small troubleshooting moment. During a cloudy week, the battery hit its reserve earlier than expected and the app showed “grid charging” overnight. I initially thought the battery was failing, but it turned out that the installer’s storm setting was enabled, allowing a cautious top-up from the grid. After a quick settings change, it returned to normal solar-first operation.
I am not completely off-grid, and I still watch seasonal production closely, but the battery has made solar power much more useful after sunset. For me, the best feature is not flashy app data; it is avoiding expensive peak electricity whenever I cook dinner and run appliances.
