Solution Solar Battery DIY Parts
I installed a home battery last spring, mainly because my electricity bill jumped whenever we used appliances after sunset. I already had rooftop solar, but without storage I was sending much of the afternoon’s excess power back to the grid and buying electricity again during the evening peak.
The difference became obvious in the first full month. Before the battery, our monthly bill averaged around $145. After adjusting the system to charge from solar between late morning and mid-afternoon, then discharge from about 5 p.m. until bedtime, the bill fell to roughly $78. It is not a perfect saving every month—cloudy weather and air-conditioning use still matter—but keeping our own solar energy has made the biggest practical difference. We now run the dishwasher, heat-pump water heater, and washing machine partly from stored power instead of relying entirely on expensive peak electricity.
I also liked seeing the battery monitor in the app. It shows solar production, household consumption, battery state of charge, and grid import in real time. One evening, the battery stopped discharging at 42 percent. I initially thought something was wrong, but the backup reserve had been set too high during installation. I reduced that reserve to 20 percent, while keeping enough capacity for short outages, and normal operation returned immediately.
Our battery is not magic. In several days of heavy rain, it barely charged, and we still pulled power from the grid. However, on bright days it usually reaches full charge before dinner. We even run our garden lights and a small “lichterkette outdoor” string from stored solar energy, which feels better than powering them entirely from the grid.
For me, the main benefit is predictable evening usage and a noticeably smaller electricity bill. The solar battery does require occasional monitoring, but after the initial setup, it has been quiet, practical, and easy to live with.
