8 months ago, I added a 280ah lithium battery to my rooftop solar system, and the biggest surprise has been how much quieter our electricity bills feel. Before storage, I sent most afternoon solar back to the grid for a modest credit, then bought power after dinner when rates jumped. Now the battery charges between late morning and mid-afternoon, then runs our refrigerator, router, lights, and heat-pump water heater through the evening peak.
On a typical summer day, it reaches 100% by around 2:30 p.m. I see it discharge to 35% by bedtime, leaving reserve for the night. Our daily grid use dropped from about 22 kWh to 7 or 8 kWh. That change cut my monthly bill by roughly $85, although the exact savings depend on weather and utility rates. The app makes the savings easy to see; I can compare solar production, battery state of charge, and peak consumption without guessing.
The only hiccup came during a cloudy week in January. The battery stopped discharging at 48%, even though the house was pulling power. I first blamed the inverter, but the app showed a reserve setting had accidentally been raised to 50% during a firmware update. Dropping that reserve to 20% fixed it immediately. I now keep a 25% backup reserve because our area gets short outages, but I learned that a high reserve can make the system look broken.
Installation was straightforward enough: an electrician mounted the battery in the garage beside the inverter, added a disconnect. The unit is not silent, but its low hum is less noticeable than the pump. For me, the real win is paying less for evening electricity while using more of my own solar power.
