Solution Solar Battery DIY Parts
I installed a 10 kWh solar battery last spring, mainly to stop buying expensive evening electricity from the grid. My system uses rooftop solar, an inverter, and a 10 kWh li po4 battery mounted in the garage.
Before storage, my panels often produced more power than we used at lunchtime, while our air conditioner, dishwasher, and cooking pushed the bill up after dinner. Now the battery charges automatically from surplus solar. Around 5 p.m., it starts covering the house, and I usually make it through the expensive peak period without pulling much from the grid.
The difference is visible on our utility statements. My first full month showed roughly $48 less than the same month the previous year, even though our usage was similar. Across summer, savings have averaged about $35 to $60 monthly. I do not pretend the battery has erased the bill: cloudy days still require grid power, and winter production is modest. However, using my own solar electricity after sunset feels much better than exporting it cheaply and buying it back hours later.
I did have one mildly annoying problem in July. The battery stopped discharging at night, even though its app showed a healthy charge level. I checked the obvious things first: backup reserve was not set too high, time-of-use scheduling was enabled, and the inverter had no warning light. A full shutdown and restart did not help. Eventually I found that a firmware update had reset my peak-rate schedule to the default time zone. After correcting the schedule, the battery resumed normal operation that evening. It was not a dramatic failure, but it taught me to check settings before assuming hardware trouble.
For me, the biggest win is predictable peak-hour savings, not total energy independence. The battery does its job, making solar useful every day here.
