4:30 p.m. used to be the time I started watching my electricity meter, because that was when our utility’s peak-rate period began. Since adding a 5 kWh solar battery to our home system, that habit has mostly disappeared. The battery charges from our rooftop panels during the afternoon and runs the refrigerator, Wi-Fi, lights, and sometimes the washing machine through the expensive evening hours.

The difference on the bill was noticeable right away. Before storage, our solar panels exported plenty of power during the day, but we still bought electricity after sunset. Now I usually use only a small amount from the grid overnight. In a typical month, my bill has dropped by roughly $35 to $50, depending on weather and how much air conditioning we use. It is not a dramatic “free electricity” situation, but the battery makes the solar energy much more useful.

My setup uses a lithium iron phosphate battery, an inverter, and a charge controller. I also keep a 24v charger 30a on hand for occasional maintenance charging. I have only needed it once, after several cloudy days when the battery’s state of charge fell lower than I liked. It worked fine, although I had to double-check the battery voltage and charging settings before connecting anything. That small troubleshooting moment reminded me that solar battery equipment is not completely plug-and-forget.

The most practical benefit has been quiet backup power. During one evening outage, the lights and internet stayed on automatically, and I did not have to start a noisy generator. The battery did not run the whole house, but it covered the essentials for several hours.

I am considering adding another battery before next summer. For now, the combination of solar panels, battery storage, and sensible load timing has made our daily energy use cheaper and much less stressful.
